This “About Me” page is suppose to let you know who I am. I wanted to put something clever here, something different that would make me look good. However, I’ve been sitting here at the keyboard for about 3 hours and I’ve written and deleted more words then I can count. So instead of over thinking this I’m just going to write what comes to mind. Please forgive the rough look of this page, I’m hoping that you’ll see that I’m just trying to let you have a little look into what makes me, me.
My name is David and I was born and raise here in London, Ontario. I’m a 36 years old husband and father of two boys, Logan and Nathan. I’m not a fan of sports, but I’ve been known to take in a UFC match from time to time. It’s not that I don’t like sports, I use to play a fair bit of street hockey when I was younger, I just think my attention span has grown too short to dedicate a lot of my time to watching a whole game of football or the like. In my quiet time I enjoy sitting down to a good zombie book and a glass of scotch.
I really didn’t want to get into talking about how passionate I am about photography, I think every good photographer is passionate about their work. However, it is hard to talk about me while excluding photography. In my life the list of priorities are as follows: 1) My family and friends, 2) Photography, 3) Everything else. I’m not even sure it’s the act of making photographs that draws me so, I think it’s more about what photography allows me to do… contribute something to society. With photography I get to meet and work with new and interesting people, I actually have a talent I can use to give back and help people smile. A few years ago I went out to a local family shelter and did a bunch of portraits for the families living there. When I returned the next week to deliver the prints, the smiles I received made me feel on top of the world.
Then there is the power of photography to tell a story, I think this is the main reason I’m addicted to photography. One day last summer I spent a day with my son with my youngest son Nathan. Nathan was diagnosed with PDD-NOS (autism spectrum) when he was about 12 months old. There’s a lot of talk about autism; what causes it, how to manage it, what society can do to help those afflicted with it. Myself, all I saw with Nathan was a happy four year old boy. I wanted to let the world know that even though my son was autistic, he was far from deserving pity. Photography allowed me to tell the story of A Day in the Life of Nathan. I’m including the slideshow I put together from my day following Nathan around. If you really want to know who I am, you’ll watch it. I think it includes some of the best work I have ever shot and it’s the kind of work I would love to be able to shoot for you someday.
